Conference excursions
There are two optional excursions planned for the Wednesday afternoon of the conference:
Rangitoto Island 11.30am – 5.15 pm (includes round trip coach transfers from Spencer on Byron to the ferry terminal, ferry to the island and tour escort).
Rangitoto Island is a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, New Zealand. The 5.5 km wide island is an iconic and widely visible landmark of Auckland with its distinctive symmetrical shield volcano cone rising 260 metres (850 ft) high over the Hauraki Gulf. Rangitoto is the most recent and the largest (2311 hectares) of the approximately 50 volcanoes of the Auckland volcanic field. It is separated from the mainland of Auckland’s North Shore by the Rangitoto Channel.
While it’s not a walk for the faint-hearted, it is family friendly. Make sure you arrive prepared – there are no shops or transport on the island and limited drinking water. Bring sunblock and a hat and wear comfortable walking shoes.
Auckland War Memorial Museum 1.15 – 4.15pm (includes round trip coach transfers from Spencer on Byron to the museum, tour guide and entry to museum).
In one of New Zealand’s most outstanding historical buildings, boldly situated in the Domain – a central city pleasure garden – you encounter exhibitions that will excite you with the artistic legacy and cultures of the Pacific people. See the monumental carvings, buildings, canoes and taonga (treasures) of the Maori. The diversity of cultures which now combine to form the rich tapestry of race, nationality and creed which is modern New Zealand.
For anyone who is interested the tour guide will conduct a 1 hour guided tour of several areas of the museum. Guests will then have 1 hour free time in the museum. Or guests may like to visit the beautiful Wintergardens or view the art installations in the Domain.
